Five Little Ocean Friends

This flannel board was one of the first I had ever made although I have remade it in this form in the years since. I got this version from Kid Jamboree. Other versions have a lobster instead of a crab. This was part of an ocean animals themed storykit in my library district so I added a lot more detail with beads and sequins.

Five little ocean friends on the ocean floor
The starfish walks away and then there were four.

Four little ocean friends living in the sea
The crab slides away and then there were three.

Three little ocean friends looking for a clue
“Glub, glub” said the jellyfish and now there are two.

Two little ocean friends not having any fun
The seahorse swam away and then there was one.

One little octopus sad and all alone
Back swims the seahorse, back swims the jellyfish
Back swims the crab, back swims the starfish
And they played in the sea foam, safe in their home.

Five Fish

This set of fish has two different rhymes to go with them depending on my mood. I was feeling fancy when I made these fish and used metallic thread for the details of the scales and the fins. I got the pattern for these fish from Gracinhas Artesanato.

Five Fish Swimming in the Water
Inspired by “All the Fish” by Caspar Babypants

One little fish is swimming in the water, swimming in the water, swimming in the water. put palms together, make hands swim
One little fish is swimming in the water.
Bubble wiggle fingers up
Bubble wiggle fingers up higher
Bubble wiggle fingers up higher
Pop! clap hands overhead as you say Pop!

Five Little Fish
Five little fish swimming in the sea
Teasing Mr. Shark, “You can’t catch me!”
Along comes Mr. Shark, as quiet as can be,
And snaps (clap hands) that fish right out of the sea!

4…
3…
2…
1…

So alone swims Mr. Shark as quiet as can be
And he looked and he looked…
“No more fishes for me.”

Colorful Fish

Five Little Whatsit rhymes are always fun to do with toddlers because they can practice their counting skills. This flannel board came about when I preparing a storytime kit for my library system. I found the word at Storytime Stuff. It is easy to add in a multilingual component since this flannel also includes colors. The pattern for these fish came from clip art from Shutterstock.

For a multicultural twist, use this activity to teach colors in Spanish or another language.

There are lots of fish in the ocean today,
Swimming and playing along the way.
Listen to the clues and make a wish!
Guess the color of each little fish!

These fish are the color of a cardboard box,
A bar of chocolate and dirty socks. (BROWN)

Look over there, bright fish are swimming by,
They are the color of strawberries and the apples in a pie. (RED)

These fish are the color of the night,
Be careful if they sneak up on you, they’ll give you a fright! (BLACK)

These fish are the color of snow,
A piece of paper and a baseball you throw. (WHITE)

Fast fish the color of grass,
Hiding from the bigger fish, swim by fast! (GREEN)

Shy fish, the color of the sky,
Swim by quickly, say goodbye! (BLUE)
